OREGON COAST VACATION
This newsletter is somewhat delayed due to my summer vacation from which I just returned.
The coast here is glorious and, having only glimpsed it for a short time last year, I scheduled my annual vacation "getaway" to be a tent camping trip at Harris Beach State Park. Situated on a cliff bounded on one side by the sea and the other by Hwy 101, the vibrance of the cliffs, forests, and rugged shore, the place spoke wonders to me.
I've camped for 20 years without once being entrapped by rain. This year, though, a drizzle started within three hours of my arrival, but I was prepared to kick back in my brand new Coleman tent labeled proudly to be made from "Weathertec - Guaranteed to Keep You Dry." Within another three hours I noticed the drips running down my tent's netted windows, leaving no doubt that the rainfly, my first line of defense, had been defeated already.
During a brief lull when the sun magically appeared for another three hours, I allowed my tent to dry out, then quickly tossed a cheap crinkly blue tarp over my expensive "guaranteed dry" tent (the same type of tarp I always set UNDER my tent as standard operating procedure)and strapped it down for the long haul.
It rained for three days out of five. Thanks to the tarp, I (could have) stayed comfy in my tent. However, not one to be "entrapped" in a tarp either, I spent most of those rainy days walking and running along the dunes and exploring tide pools in the pouring rain getting myself as wet and sandy as you might imagine possible, and probably ,just as wet as a dripping tent might have caused (without the fun, though).
Back at the state park, however, numerous other tents began leaking after soooo many hours of rain. I ended up giving two strangers whom I'll never see again two tarps I kept in my car's trunk (coz tarps are just so good for so many things).
So, the point of this tale is, if tent "technology" fails so frequently, why don't the manufacturer's just stick with the tried-and-true tarp, call it some fancy name, charge us a fortune, and sell it in mass quantities?

AMERICAN RELEASE OF "A WAR AGAINST TRUTH"
One of my favorite authors is Paul William Roberts. His most recent book, A War Against Truth, was published in Canada and largely unavailable in the U.S. for far too long. However, Raincoast Publishers will be releasing it in October 2005. For more info on the book, see Paul's website at: www.paulwmroberts.com
